Installation for 50 Windgongs

Upon entering the installation, visitors find themselves in a forest of wind gongs, a chamber with a piano pedal pressed down. Fifty round, thin brass discs of various sizes float in a very confined, narrow space. These Feng Gongs come from an old bell foundry, located in Wuhan, not far from the infamous wildlife market where the coronavirus originated. They are activated by sound, without direct contact. This creates an extreme acoustic state. Every sound becomes trapped in the gongs and continues to resonate in brass and continues to resonate in brass (a total of two hundred kilograms), so that the visitor seems to be in an endless space. It is a kind of acoustic exchange. This otherworldly effect is reminiscent of reverb plates used in recording studios before the advent of double-track tape and reverb machines. In an extremely close and dense arrangement, the installation takes the open resonance of the wind gongs to the extreme.

On the vernissage and finissage days, it serves as a starting point for improvised interventions by various musicians. Theo Nabicht and Damir Bacikin previously participated in the world premiere of Moritz Gagern’s “Concerto for 50 Wind Gongs and Mixed Ensemble”; now they are bringing their own material into dialogue with the installation.
